The Role

We are building a state-of-the-art Data Platform to transfer, process, and enrich satellite data in the cloud, delivering analysis-ready geospatial information to both internal and external customers. Our team is passionate about leveraging cloud-native geospatial technologies to unlock the full potential of our data, making it accessible, insightful, and actionable.


As a Backend Engineer, you will play a crucial role in developing and scaling our cloud-native data platform, used by customers and internal teams to harness our Earth Observation (EO) data. You will join a cross-functional team, working on engineering solutions around productisation and product development. Your contributions will focus on building robust interfaces for data access and query, setting standards, and developing services that deliver high-quality geospatial data products at scale. Your work will empower both our teams and customers to extract value from complex geospatial data, fostering data-driven innovation.


Responsibilities 



  • Design and develop scalable backend systems and APIs to support data ingestion, processing, and delivery for both internal and external users.
  • Build and maintain backend services for accessing, searching, and delivering large volumes of geospatial data, leveraging Python, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, Cognito, and Docker.
  • Optimise data storage for customer delivery, ensuring fast search and retrieval while keeping costs low.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers to understand user requirements and ensure data products are user-friendly.
  • Ensure integration and consistency with other systems, such as Data Pipelines.
  • Document best practices for data platform engineering, code quality, testing, and user accessibility.
  • Stay up to date with new technologies, frameworks, and standards, evaluating their potential for our platform.



Job requirements

About you:

  • Motivated, curious, and proactive team player with a can-do attitude.
  • Strong programming and backend skills, particularly in Python, APIs (ideally FastAPI), and Databases (ideally PostgreSQL).
  • Proven experience in building performant and scalable backend services.
  • Experience with containerization (e.g., Docker) and CI/CD pipelines.

Nice to have skills:

  • Experience in the EO sector and/or NewSpace startups.
  • Knowledge of FastAPI, PostgreSQL, OpenAPI, Swagger, Cognito.
  • Familiarity with cloud-native geospatial frameworks and technologies (e.g., STAC, Zarr, cloud-optimized GeoTIFFs).
  • Understanding of user-centric solutions and frontend requirements.
  • Experience with automated testing.
  • Experience working on cloud-native projects (AWS, GCP, or European cloud providers).
  • Any other relevant experience that adds value to our team!
